Preparing Your Child for School

Some people do not need to pay extra attention in preparing their children for school because they have already been through Kindergarten. Although it is common for people to send their children to pre-school centres before starting primary school, it is not compulsory and some parents do chose to keep them at home until they feel that they are better prepared for the change.

This can be just as productive as pre-school because being in a nurturing environment is also an important part in creating a well-balanced child. If this is your situation, there is no reason why your child cannot cope with his transition into the school environment just as well as his peers when the time comes.

Laying the Groundwork

By giving your child as much information as possible, you will find that many fears that he may be experiencing will disappear. This is because the timing, the (school) program and what actually happens at school is understood and therefore does not cause a state of confusion.

Creative pastimes stimulate your child’s thinking process and can actually enhance his learning capabilities. Creative pastimes also improve hand and eye coordination that aid with regards to your child’s handwriting skills.

Concentration is a skill that is learnt. It needs routine and a quiet atmosphere to teach your child to focus in and to listen attentively. Reading a book with your child offers you an opportunity to teach concentration while at the same time enjoying a book together.

Help your child to feel relaxed about starting school by talking to him about the new friends he will make and the exciting things that he will do. Explain the daily routine of how you will drop him off at school in the morning and pick him up again in the afternoon so that he is not surprised by the situation.

Orientation Day School Visits

It is very exciting for a child to visit his new school before he starts so that he will get a chance to meet his teacher and see his classroom.

Visiting the school can also help the parent feel more at ease with the transition because many parents also experience anxiety when their children go into this new stage of life and this is especially so if the parent and child have always been at home together.

Having a clear understanding of your child’s new educational program and having met the teachers can relieve much of that tension for you.

Active at Home

Keep your child active at home with play, dance, sport and music. As he grows, sitting and watching TV or playing video games can become convenient as a pass time but it is a good idea to keep electrical activities limited. In fact children won’t even miss the TV if they get used to occupying themselves by other means.

Getting outdoors to get some fresh air and daylight every day, even for a short while, does wonders for your physical and mental health whatever age you are.

Don’t attempt to give your child too much information at once, do it over a period of time so that you don’t make it all sound too overwhelming, and don't forget to point out that school is a fun.
