Get a Job Without University

University is a word ringing in the ears of every high school student. For those who are not able to make the grades needed to enter this elite area of education there are alternative ways of becoming a qualified member of the work force.

Remember that there is an entire world turning and it is not run by university graduates alone.

Many successful entrepreneurs are successful due to their ability to identify their own strengths regardless of whether or not these qualities are recognised by anyone else.

This has played a far more significant role in their achievements than the grades on their final school reports.

Success stories without university

Here are some people who achieved significant success before (or entirely without) university yet still became successful in their own right:
  • Bill Gates Founder of Microsoft
  • Richard Branson Founder of Virgin
  • Steve Jobs Co Founder of Apple Computers
  • Rigoberta Menchu Nobel Peace Prize winner 1992
  • Johnny Depp Actor
  • Beatrix Potter Children’s Author/Illustrator

Acknowledge Your Strengths

There are many people who have individual talents that do not show up so easily during their school years. This may not be entirely due to their lack of intellect so much as the person’s lack of interest in the subject because of the way that the information had been presented to them.

Many students have the discipline to study well even when they do not particularly find the subject interesting but not all students can manage to do this so their academic level appears low.

Often the key to studying well is as simple as studying something that you enjoy.

Whilst going to university is an option that has its definite advantages, it is important for young people to understand that there are other avenues open to them and they should seize those opportunities when they present themselves.

Alternative Career Paths
for Young People

Here are some options that can be considered as alternative paths to career success:
  • Short Courses; often inexpensive and well worth the money. These courses can allow you to gain entry into your chosen career path.
  • Internships and apprentices; these serve well for helping you to earn money for your general needs and to pay the expenses of your studies.
  • TAFE colleges (Further Education); these colleges are easier to get into than universities but offer the same results on the whole. You still gain a qualification in your chosen area and you are able to apply for positions that require qualified personnel.
  • Get any job; this method can take you into unexpected territory. One of the most overlooked situations is that there are many interesting jobs that you only learn of once you have actually been working within an industry.
  • Keep learning in your own time to improve yourself. Apart from giving you better work opportunities you will keep you alert for when you attend interviews and you can feel confident in yourself that your abilities are fresh and your mind is ticking.

Get Qualified

Whether or not you manage to get qualified before entering the workforce, you should still aim to get some sort of recognised qualification in your field. It may be just a piece of paper to some, but it can make all the difference on your resume when you are ready to take the next step forward to improve yourself.
