Pangeo Mountains of Northern Greece
The Pangeo Mountains of Greece offer the vistor, views, adventure and a sense of unaltered nature as you take to the Mesoropi mountain trek that leads up to the water cave following a five Kilometers walk.
But have you ever wondered how those handy concrete steps turned up half-way along your tough mountain walk, or who made that little log fence that was there to protect tourists from falling down a steep mountain edge?
It may have never occurred to you before, but there are many places that are too inconvenient for a four-wheel-drive to transport building materials to, or even for ten men to carry them by foot.
In the Northern Greece area of Kavala, the old ways of using mules for transporting heavy materials through mountainous and rough terrain is still the best solution.
Apostolos Kondozidis lives in a small village in Kavala (Northern Greece), but his work has taken him all over the country. With the help of local laborers as assistants, Apostolos has been making things easier for tourists for the past thirty years.
He is contracted by the tourism board in Greece and works throughout the summer months constructing pathways, bridges, steps, fences in fact anything that helps the tourists along their walks.
During the winter months it is impossible for him to do this work as the wet weather causes difficulties with the animals and with the work that he has to do. Fortunately, he makes enough money during the dryer seasons to keep him going through the year which proves the old proverb true, ‘Make hay while the sun shines’.
In Kavala, the council has its own mules and horses that graze high up in the Pangeo mountains. When a construction job is assigned, the animals are walked down to the lower grounds where they can be loaded up for work.
Mules are well known for their difficult ways when it comes to working, but Apostolos is quite used to working with animals and says that once he gets them moving in the right direction, they are not really any trouble at all.
