Helping Your Child to Achieve at School

If you find that your child is having trouble achieving in a particular area, there are methods that you, as a parent, can put into practice to help her along her way.

Remember that although teachers are trained to convey messages in an effective manner they may not have time to give your child individual attention if she happens to get stuck.

    Simplify

    • Sit with your child at home and go through the lesson slowly with them. If it involves math go through the examples one step at a time and help your child to see the pattern. Write one or two very simple versions of the question so that they can try out the formula without a degree of difficulty and practice using the formula.

Taking away the difficulty helps them to concentrate on the formula instead of the difficult problem and then it is just a matter of changing numbers.

    Illustrate

    • With academic topics, begin with reading through with your child from the start. Discuss the topic as fully as you can, explaining as you go. Never be embarrassed to say that you don’t know something, just tell your child that you can look that up and explain it later.

Keep a scrap piece of paper with you so that you can illustrate things wherever possible. This helps them to visualize the situation and to comprehend it more easily. It also helps in retaining the subject in the memory.

    Encourage

    • Never make your child feel like they are unable to learn a topic. Just let them realize that they have got to learn it a different way to the methods that they have used so far.

Use positive language with your child when helping them and if they are still finding it hard, drop in a few simple questions that they can answer easily to help build their self confidence.

    Develop their Learning Capabilities

    • If your child has a problem with learning in general, then their problem is not with understanding the information as much as it is about their learning skills. Your child could be lacking in good thought process skills.

Use creative methods like drawing and painting to stimulate an interest in areas that your child may not find interesting at all. Using a fun element to bring the topic to life creates a new viewpoint.

Creativity also gives your child the opportunity to look at the details in the topic while studying the image, bringing home a few important points that can click with their interest.

Music has always been associated with mental development. Playing an instrument is especially beneficial to math topics and listening to classical music is understood to greatly improve the mind’s learning capabilities.

    Experience

    • Expose your child to exhibitions and experiments that can lead to an interest in learning. Talk about how things happen and attempt to open your child’s awareness in life through discussion because nothing can work better for them than actually wanting to learn for themselves.
